Today, one of the most common ways to get into a loft is either with a permanent ladder or stair setup, or via a ladder. The ladders that you can get today for your lofts are very advanced in that they are easy to pull down, easy to set up and easy to climb up. A very popular option for these is the Wooden Loft Ladder. If you have any sort of carpentry skills you can build one of these yourself, for under a hundred dollars. Alternatively, you can go to the shops and buy one. They are not very difficult to fit either, or you can get a carpenter to put it in place.

The other option to a Wooden Loft Ladder is a Concertina Ladder, which is usually made out of metal. The reason these are made of metal is to be as thin and light weight as possible, whilst yielding maximum strength. These fold vertically down, much like several sets of scissors. A Wooden Loft Ladder is usually in three or four parts, and folds out sideways in the pieces. The wooden loft ladders are heavier, but then they are usually cheaper and easier to repair as well. At the end of the day you need to work out what you want the ladder for, and consider both the disadvantages and advantages of each type.

The main problem with a Wooden Loft Ladder is the size and weight. When you compare these to some of the vertically folding loft ladders, they do seem awfully bulky and heavy. In saying this, often it is something which is totally unimportant. Assuming that you fit the ladder properly in the ceiling, and you have enough space for the ladder to sit safely above the ceiling there won’t be any problems. A wooden loft ladder is often easier to climb, because the rings are square and wide enough to stand on comfortably.

Often these are built on a bit of an angle so that you are really just walking up stairs instead of going straight up a ladder. It all comes down to the number of times that the ladder is going to get used, and the price difference between your options. If you are only ever going to go up to the loft once a year then it’s not really important. A Telestep Ladder is another option which a number of people are catching onto. These are just portable ladders which are designed like a telescope. They can extend right up to about 8 meters, depending on the model that you get.

These would easily fit in your cupboard upstairs, and so you could just keep it there until you need it. The advantage of this is that the ladder becomes useful for other jobs. When you need to clean the windows, prune the trees or replace globes you have a ladder which can be used, and it’s not attached to the ceiling. A Wooden Loft Ladder is a good option though, and many people love them.
