Loft Ladder
Getting access to your loft is something that you want to be able to do quickly. There is nothing worse than having to lug a big, heavy ladder throughout the house just to open a hatch and get to your loft! The solution today is to have a ladder which folds out of the hatch, and these are great in terms of functionality. Most people have a Concertina Loft Ladder to get to their loft. The only other real alternative is to have a permanent setup, but this is not always convenient or very cost effective. I much prefer using a Concertina Ladder to get into the loft, because they are light weight, well designed and easy to set up.
All you need to do to get into the loft with these is to undo the hatch, and then you just pull the ladder down. These ladders vary in how they work, but they all fold out. Some fold out vertically like scissors do, and then touch the ground. Others fold out horizontally, as if you were to straighten the letter M sideways. Generally the vertical ones are better as they can hold more weight, and they tend to be made out of metal. The ones that fold out horizontally are usually made out of timber which is much heavier for this purpose.
A Loft Ladder needs to be something that is easily set up, and easily put away. To install one of the ladders which pulls down you only need a few basic tools, and a bit of common sense. The best thing about these ladders is that they use the floor to put all of the weight on, rather than hanging off the ceiling. All the support does at the roof is ensure that the ladder stays vertical. Some ladders are designed more like stairs in that as you walk up you are walking forward. These put more stress on your roof, and need to be installed properly. They are more comfortable to use, but not always the best solution.
If you are good with wood work, you can build your own Loft Ladder by hand. Some of the ladders just push straight up, and this is entirely possible if the roof height above allows for it. Ensure when you buy a loft ladder that it has the right specifications for your house. Not every roof is the same height, and if the ladders don’t touch the floor then you will find that a lot of unnecessary stress is placed on the roof. If you don’t set one of these up properly you could end up pulling a part of your roof down, or injuring yourself.
A Telestep Ladder is another good option for a Loft Ladder, and you can just keep these in a cupboard upstairs or out of the way. They are very handy for doing other work around the house, and as a result become an item of multi purposes! If you are struggling with an old, heavy ladder as it is to get into the loft it is truly time that you upgraded. Get a Loft Ladder which is designed for the job and you won’t regret it. Garden Ladders are not meant to be used to get into the loft!
